Fortnite for all
If you’re just getting into Fortnite ,it can be very intimidating. There’s a lot of mechanics, a lot of things to learn, and a huge map you don’t know the layout of. If you’re an older player, the game can often feel more like pushing a boulder up a hill while everyone else is pushing a small pebble. It’s a fact that as you get older past a certain point, your reaction time gets slower. In Fortnite, reaction time is typically critical in achieving that victory royale. But with some practice, clever planning, and ingenuity, older players can get over that hurdle. Here are a few things you can do to improve as an older player in Fortnite.
Land on the outskirts of the map
Junk Junction, Wailing Woods, Snobby Shores – these are going to be the places you want to land on. They’re outside of the main populated areas, there’s always a few chests to be found there, and there’s always a good amount of resources available nearby. At these places, the most you’ll have to compete with is one or two other players. This will allow you to slowly build up your resources and avoid too many early confrontations. Playing the game a bit slower and more intelligently is crucial as an older player.
Land on the populated areas of the map as practice
Tilted Towers, Retail Row, Dusty Divot – these are the places you want to land on for this tip. This may sound like the complete opposite of the first tip, but it’s important to recognize that this is only for practice purposes. If you’re genuinely going for a victory royale, don’t land in the populated areas. Practice landing quickly, practice looting up, practice building, and most importantly – practice combat. You can’t go wrong with practicing the basic mechanics. As an older player, you’ll need more practice, so it’s important to get as much in as fast as you can. Fortnite has a significant learning curve, so don’t get discouraged if you don’t get any eliminations your first few practice attempts. Just keep practicing, and you’ll get it eventually.
Figure out which inventory spaces belong to what type of item
You have five inventory slots in Fortnite, and you’ll need every single one of them. As a general rule, you’re going to want to figure out which slots belong to which type of item. For example, a common recommendation is to have the first three slots dedicated to weapons for easy access, the fourth slot being a throwable or explosive, and the last slot is reserved for some sort of recovery item like a shield potion or a medkit. You can assign them whichever way you’d like, but this will ensure that you don’t accidentally choose the wrong item in the heat of battle.
Learn how to build
Building is pretty essential in Fortnite; it does have “fort” in its name after all. Learning how to build effectively and efficiently is crucial for everyone, but especially older players. Quickly building a decent fort will allow you to take a breather as the pace slows down a bit and give you a chance to heal up and get your head back in the game. To practice this, you should try to land in a place with a lot of resources, such as Wailing Woods, and try to build a decent fort as quickly as possible. At the minimum, try to build something that covers you from every direction and has stairs so that you can return fire effectively and safely.
Stay on the outskirts of the eye of the storm
The storm can be pretty intimidating to new players, and as such, it might be tempting to try to go to the middle of the eye of the storm right away. This, however, makes you a huge target. Most people have the same idea to go to the center of the eye, but this also means that there are more people going in that direction than anywhere else. Staying close to the edge of the eye also prevents you from being taken from surprise by behind or otherwise getting flanked.
The main difference between a younger player and an older player getting into Fortnite is the idea of patience. Whereas a younger player might be able to get by with a quicker reaction speed, an older player will have to bide their time more – looking for critical openings to strike as opposed to simply running and gunning. If you follow these tips, you’ll be well on your way to your first victory royale, no matter your age.
